Private by design — free checks never store your brief

Find the citations that need a second look before you file.

CiteProof checks every citation and quotation in your brief against public court records. You get a report that shows what verified, what needs your attention, and what we could not check.

What leaves our server

Sent to CourtListener
Only the citation strings we extract — for example 550 U.S. 544 — so they can be resolved. Looking up a case in full also reveals that case's identity to CourtListener. Your brief text and quotes are not sent to any third party — except your own paid Verification Record, emailed to you as its durable copy.
Where it runs
Processed on railway in US West (California, USA). TLS is terminated at the provider.
What we store
Counts and timestamps. Not your text. Not your citation list tied to your identity. Uploads are not persisted. Paid checks keep their findings for 90 days.
Rate limiting
Rate-limit counters use hashed IP addresses held for up to 24 hours and are never linked to content.
Models
No AI model sees your brief. Extraction and lookup are deterministic.

Questions, answered directly

What is CiteProof?
CiteProof checks every citation and quotation in a legal brief against public court records. Each citation is reported as Verified, Needs attention, or Couldn't check -- never as proof your filing is correct. See how it works.
How much does it cost?
Existence and identity checks are free with no signup. Quote verification with the closest passage and pin cite, plus the downloadable Verification Record, costs $49 for one brief or $199 for five. See pricing.
How does a check work?
Paste your brief or upload a .docx or .pdf file. We extract every citation and quoted passage, resolve them against CourtListener, and group the results by what needs your attention -- opening with a counts line so you can see what was read.
What does CiteProof not check?
Whether authority supports your proposition, whether it is still good law, facts, or statutes. Attorney review is still required under Rule 11 -- the report says this on every page.
Does it replace Shepard's or KeyCite?
No. Good-law verdicts belong to the citators. Every resolved citation carries a "Still good law?" box with citing-history searches as the starting point, never a verdict.
Do you store my brief?
Free checks never store it -- only counts, timestamps and a session ID. Paid checks keep their findings for 90 days and email you the Verification Record as your durable copy. No AI model ever sees your brief. See the Privacy Policy.
Can it catch AI-hallucinated citations?
Yes -- that is the founding use case. Fabricated citations fail existence or resolve to a different case than claimed (free check); altered quotes are shown side-by-side with the real passage (paid check). Measured October 2026: 0 false cleans on 6 bad dev items and 15 bad holdout items (rule-of-three bound about 20% -- see why CiteProof for the caveats). Try the fabricated-citation demo with no signup.
How is this different from Westlaw, Lexis, or Clearbrief?
No subscription, no install, no IT approval: one brief checked tonight for $49, or $0 to try. Subscriptions win on depth -- good-law citators, fact checking -- which is why the report points you at them instead of guessing. See why CiteProof.
Who is it for?
Solo and small-firm litigators who file in federal court, especially briefs drafted with AI assistance or by juniors. If you already hold a research subscription with citators, use us as the pre-filing gate and keep the citator for good law.
How do I sign in?
Free checks need no account. Paid features sign you in with an emailed link, or with Continue with Google -- which confirms your email address only and never receives your brief.
What if the report is wrong? Can I get a refund?
Report a wrong or missed result and it is investigated first; errors that are ours are refunded or credited. Unused credits are refundable within 30 days through Paddle, the merchant of record. See the Refund Policy.
